Nova Care are driven to break the cycle of isolation within our elderly and vulnerable communities. With the idea stemming from a joke between one of our very own clients (The Chief NitWit) and the manager – a social group was created. The name for this group was put forward by this same client to a vote – with 94% majority, The NitWits was born.

What started as a fund-raising event for the Alzheimer’s society has turned into a bi-annual event, mainly funded by Nova Care that so far over 600 individuals collectively have attended. We've seen these events blossom into something incredible. We've had non-verbal clients speak, we’ve had an attendee on an end-of-life pathway start to dance, we’ve seen friendships form, pen pals created and been witness to so much joy and laughter just in those few hours alone.

 

​On the day there is entertainment, we hold raffles, we have a travelling book stall, there’s a hot meal and how ever many teas and coffees you like and there’s always time for a cheeky few at the bar. We invite local agencies who are available to offer individuals support like the council, Kirklees dementia hub, our local police, fire service etc. to come and speak to people. To give information to people who may not otherwise be able to access it. We also have DoE Volunteers on the day to help our events run smoothly.

 We want The Nitwits to become more than just another social club, we want to become a community, somewhere people can come and relax, be supported, informed, listened to and felt seen.
